Dancing at Waterfire with the Ladies of the Rolling Pin

My Morris team (well, a fraction thereof...) danced in Providence last night at Waterfire, at the invitation of the Ladies of the Rolling Pin. Several other teams were there, too, including a partial side from Newtowne; we teamed up to dance about a half a dozen dances.

After the dancing I wandered around for a while, taking in the sights and people.

Downtown Providence is quite lovely at night.

There are a few more pictures, and a video clip of the lighting of the Waterfire lamps, in this album:

May Day 2010

My Morris team danced out on May Day, along with Clownfish Rapper and Commonwealth Morris. We started in Davis Square, a few blocks from my home, then danced for the Revels May Day celebration, Verrill Farm in Concord, and finally concluded the day with a feast at Tom's home in Sudbury. A fine time was had by all.

Sean Smith caught this nice moment of Dan and me in mid-leap. Thanks, Sean!

Pinewoods Morris Men 2009 AGM

My Morris team held its annual general meeting yesterday at The Point, as customary. Much was discussed and little accomplished, also as customary, aside from the consumption of crisps, beer and some delicious snacks brought by Jan. We did, however, confirm the current squire and bagman for another year (or portion thereof), and the foreman was reappointed.

Business concluded, we piled into cars and drove to the Heritage Museums in Sandwich for some dancing. The hot and humid weather caused us to wrap things up after fewer than a dozen dances, and we capped the trip with rides on the carousel and some portraits in the Art Museum.

As usual, we opened with Highland Mary.

We danced at several places around the grounds and wound up at the carousel for a ride.

After one last stand outside the carousel we went back into the museum for some portraits.

"It's almost like being a Morris Team."

That's how Tom, the concertina player extraordinaire for the Pinewoods Morris Men, once described having Pinewoods dance out on three consecutive weekends. We repeated that rare event this spring, dancing at the Marlboro Morris Ale, the Marlboro Morris Men's Portland gig, and the Bouwerie Boys' annual Suds. I took a few pictures:

The Men

Last weekend my Morris team, the Pinewoods Morris Men, had their annual Fall tour. Obviously I wasn't with them, but teammate Bill sent this picture of The (mostly) Men.

Thanks, Bill, and hi, guys!

May Day

May Day is a national holiday in India, and I have the day off. Nonetheless, I plan to go to the office today and get some quiet work time in. I'm hoping that RuthAnne will go to the usual May Day happening by the Charles and take her phone, so I can call her.

May Day makes me think of Morris, and I received this image in my mail this morning from a fellow member of the Pinewoods Morris Men from the annual Nantucket outing. Fools, indeed.

Tomorrow I'll be attending a wedding; one of my co-workers (Srinivas) is getting married. This will be the second wedding I've witnessed since arriving; the first was also a co-worker (Pankaj). Weddings are much more open affairs here than they have become in the U.S. and I'm pleased to be invited to them. Here are some pictures of the invitation:

I'll try to get some pictures (if appropriate) of the ceremony and reception. This wedding will be a Hindu wedding; the first one I attended was Christian (with some Hindu accents).
